Alexandra, in the heart of Central Otago, was originally one of the many gold mining towns scattered throughout the area. Situated at the junction of the Clutha and Manuherikia rivers where SH 8 from Cromwell and SH 85 merge, the area is now famous for its world class wine (particularly Pinot Noir), stone fruit, fine merino wool and the Otago Central Rail Trail.
The climate is semi-arid with lovely hot summers and cool crisp winters and this along with fertile soils and an abundance of irrigation makes the area ideal for fruit growing. With contrasting scenery including orchards and dredge tailings, lush valleys and parched schist slopes, spectacular spring blossom, and an abundance of lakes and ski fields nearby Alexandra is an ideal holiday location all year round.
For a bit of history visit the historic Shaky Bridge, The Old Court House and The Old Bridge or travel to the historic gold mining town of Clyde. View the immense Clyde hydro dam, sample some of Central Otago’s finest Pinot Noir in one of the areas many vineyards, take a 4WD tour through the beauty and solitude of the back country or simply stand on the banks of the one of the many rivers and spend a day fishing for trout.
Alexandra is also on the Otago Central Rail Trail, the 151km old rail corridor between Middlemarch and Clyde, which provides cyclists and walkers with unique barren and rocky landscape, wide open blue skies, stunning cloud formations, magnificent viaducts, and an abundance of stone bridges and tunnels.
Further afield is the rest of Central Otago which covers an area of 10,000km, a peaceful, powerful place of mountains, rivers, rocks and tussocks. Get close to nature in this inspiring and timeless land with breathtaking vistas and extraordinary contrasts. Drive to Wanaka & Queenstown, both just over an hour away, to experience majestic mountains, deep alpine lakes and crystal clear sky as well as fabulous cafes, restaurants and shopping.
